10 Must-See Summer Movies

By Victoria Robertson on May 12, 2017

The summer is (finally) upon us! It’s time for bonfires, camping, summer concerts, the pool, and countless other outdoor activities that the harsh winter has prevented us from participating in.

However, for those random rain storms, or even as a cure for your terrible sunburns, a day or two inside couldn’t hurt. So for those days, hitting the local movie theater is going to be your ultimate savior.

And lucky for you, there are plenty of movies coming out this summer for you to get excited for.

So, without further ado, here is your summer movie preview: the 10 must-see movies of (the first half of) summer 2017.

Enjoy!

1. “Snatched”

The comedy starring unlikely duo Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer is likely to be one of the better comedies released this summer, continuing the tradition of strong, female-led comedies.

The story follows the mother-daughter duo as they travel abroad and end up kidnapped, bringing them closer together. And let’s be honest, watching Hawn and Schumer together in a comedy is reason enough to go see this one.

2. “The Wall”

For all you action fans out there, this is yet another war movie, this time set in Iraq, following two American soldiers. The two soldiers, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena, find themselves trapped by one of the opposing snipers.

The film, built almost entirely on suspense, is a highly anticipated one. And it’s coat tailing off the success of such films as “Zero Dark Thirty,” “American Sniper,” “13 Hours” and “Lone Survivor,” so it has quite a few films out there to look up to.

3. “Alien: Covenant”

“Alien” fans rejoice! We finally have another one! For those of you that thought the series should have ended after the first film, you aren’t alone. But it doesn’t matter. Because the next installment is here, and it’s ready to wow.

This film, following the events in “Prometheus” but prior to the events in the first “Alien” (making this a prequel of sorts), is highly anticipated. So, here’s to hoping Ridley Scott can satisfy longtime fans of the series.

4. “Baywatch”

It’s a reimagining of the far too popular series, this time starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron. Need I say more? The guys will also be joined by “Quantico” star Priyanka Chopra. So there’s that.

One of the biggest draws to this comedy is the self-awareness, which is undoubtedly going to make it comparable to “22 Jump Street” and the like.

So while you should certainly expect dumb comedy, you should expect it in a good way. And you can bet Efron will be shirtless a majority of the time. No complaints here, right?

5. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”

Johnny Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom is back as Will Turner, and there’s a new villain in town.

The “Pirates” franchise has been a money maker from the start, and Captain Jack is one of the most iconic characters around, meaning this one will likely draw in some big crowds. This is especially true with the return of Orlando Bloom.

6. “Wonder Woman”

The female superhero is finally getting her day in the spotlight! While I’m personally not one for DC heroes, this is going to be a big one for the summer.

Starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, this film is going to redefine superhero movies, and that alone is a good reason to go check it out, DC fan or not!

7. “It Comes At Night”

Another horror film for the summer, this looks like it’s going to be more of a psychological thriller (much like “It Follows” and “Don’t Breathe”). Still, the suspense alone will keep you terrified throughout!

The premise, fairly simple and seen before numerous times, follows a family in which the patriarch attempts to keep his family safe inside the house. However, of course, this safety is threatened when unexpected visitors threaten to derail their safe haven. Sounds like a good one to me!

8. “The Mummy”

For those of you familiar with the original films, don’t get too excited — this is going to be nothing like that. Starring Tom Cruise as the leading man and switching things up with a female mummy this time around (a little gender bending, thank you very much), this film definitely bridges the gap between the original and horror a bit more.

9. “Cars 3”

Yes, they’re still making these films. The “Cars” franchise has been a fan favorite for a long time, and the third installment introduces a love interest and a new model that you won’t want to miss! Plus, Owen Wilson is back as the voice of beloved Lightning McQueen.

10. “47 Meters Down”

It’s another shark movie, but this one stars Mandy Moore. And again, riding in on the coattails of “The Shallows” starring Blake Lively, this female drove horror/suspense film is worth tuning into.

But, making this film a bit different, the diving cage holding Mandy Moore’s character and her sister plunges deep into the ocean, leaving them stranded at the bottom, with limited air. That’ll raise the stakes quite a bit.

So check out these films this summer, as they’re certainly going to be worth the wait! (At least, we hope they are).

Stay tuned for another summer movie preview as well!
