4 Fashion Icons for College Students

By Amanda Cohen on September 6, 2017

Every person has a fashion icon whom they look up to and respect. Whether that person is a model, an actor/actress, a singer, a writer, or any other profession, it’s nice to have someone to inspire your looks and values after.

Even though there are thousands of fashion icons to choose from, I believe that there are a few who are universally popular and who are household names. Even though this isn’t an exhaustive list, these women are extremely important to the fashion world; even if they aren’t your personal favorite fashion icons, they have positively contributed to all things fashion. If you want to hear my thoughts, continue reading!

1. Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour is a fashion icon for many, not just college students. Even at the age of 67, she continues to inspire everyone … no matter the age. Wintour epitomizes beauty and grace, and she is a vital member in the fashion world. She has been the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988. Her determination and rise in the fashion world inspire young women today, which is why her name remains prominent on college campuses.

When she was a young girl in elementary school, she defied her dress code, as do many young women today. She is a boss ass b**** and will continue to be admired by college students worldwide. If you don’t know the name Anna Wintour, you definitely know the name Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada. The story was written by Wintour’s former assistant and apparently paints an accurate portrait of who Wintour is and how she ran Vogue. If you love fashion and if you love the idea of women working their way up to the top, make Anna Wintour a household name.

2. Cindy Crawford

Cindy Crawford will always remain a household name. As a former model, she pioneered the looks that we wear today because we are bringing back the ’60s. Crawford strutted her stuff in high-rise pants and crop tops before many of us were even born. Even though she isn’t as current as Kendall Jenner, her name continues to proliferate college campuses, even with the youngest students.

She walked the runway and modeled Calvin Klein, Versace, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, and more. Her magazine appearances surpassed most models in her generation. She is a major role model for young fashionistas. She dropped out of college to pursue her dream and thank goodness she did.

I’m not saying that college isn’t important, but her bravery shows that it’s most important to follow your dream, no matter what that dream is. She is smart, beautiful, charitable, and a great mother. With all of these qualities, how can anyone be surprised that she is such an inspiration on college campuses?

3. Bella and Gigi Hadid

I can’t write an article about fashion icons without talking about someone, or some people, more current. Bella and Gigi Hadid, aka the Hadid sisters, seem to be everywhere these days, and for good reason. They are beautiful and they are both great at their jobs. Both sisters have walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which is an event that college women take extremely seriously; they walk looking all beautiful and we want ice-cream and marvel at the exquisite lingerie.

Mama Hadid, aka Yolanda, was a model herself and inspired both of her daughters to be the fashion icons that they are today. Every single day these two women are featured in high-fashion magazines and social media news sources like the Daily Mail on Shapchat. They are beautiful and they strut their stuff and hold their own. They are the epitome of fashion for 21st-century college students.

4. Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham is the model that every young woman needs to see. She is beautiful, she is professional, she is caring, and she promotes body positivity. Agencies everywhere want to work with her because she boosts young women’s confidence and she looks beautiful while doing it. She broke national news as well as never-before-seen modeling norms in 2016 when she became the first plus-sized woman to grace us with her presence on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

She holds her own and she isn’t afraid to stand up to the haters. Plus, her style is absolutely on fleek (just look at her Instagram pictures from Bali and you will be sold). If she isn’t already one of your fashion icons and inspirations, then she should be and you should start doing your research and following her accounts now.

Whether or not you agree with me, I hope this list of people sparked some conversations between you and your family and friends. If you don’t agree, I would love to hear your thoughts, but I also encourage you to research the people on this list and see if you maybe want to add them to your individual fashion icons list.

To all of my fashion-lovers out there please stay tuned for more articles about all things fashion-related.
